"A recent trip to Santa Cruz & Capitola, two of the regions oldest and most nostalgic
beach resorts permitted us to live, if only for a few days in the pages of those
classic bedtime stories. The clue that this trip was going to transcend the
rushed, anxious reality of everyday life came when we opened the carved
wooden door of the Black Pearl Cottage, perched on the cliffs over
the Pacific in Southern Santa Cruz.
"Does a magician live here? asked my oldest Daughter Melia, gazing at the towering
fireplace of stacked and mortared river rocks, a copper cauldron suspended high
above it. And indeed almost every detail, from the red velvet, gold tassled
drapes to the antique shortened iron chairs and round plank table (which
allows you to sit, childlike, two feet from the ground), seemed
straight out of the land of princesses and castles.
In fact, it turns out owner, builder Bev Brady's vision arose from a long out of
print childrens fairy tale. The tales of "a wiley gnome". But it was the
astonishing proximity of the ocean______We spent one whole evening sitting by
the floor to ceiling windows watching the glow of the campfires strung
like jewels along half mile Seabright Beach___that made me feel like
I was giving my children the gift of an experience that until now
they'd only seen in pictures.

What impressed us most (besides the beauty of the Cottage and the views
it holds within) is that you just don't have to "do" anything
there to have a wonderful time. Just to sit overlooking
the drama of the great Pacific Ocean and watch the
surf break on the magnificent beach before us
was awe inspiring. The sounds of the
sea, and sea lions reminded us of
our four Boston Terriers at
home. The walks along
beach at sunrise
sunset were
